Er zijn nog geen GCMs die het hart sneller doen kloppen. Positief is de aandacht voor zuinig omgaan met grondstoffen en voor systemen en technieken die de efficiëntie van processen vergroten. Dankzij die aandacht is de uitstoot van broeikasgassen uit de landbouw de laatste 15 jaar aan het afnemen, net als trouwens in de andere sectoren van de maatschappij.

Maar veel van de oplossingen zijn technisch en brengen (hoge) kosten met zich mee. De afhankelijkheid van boeren van banken neemt toe. Ze zijn steeds minder in staat om een gezonde bedrijfseconomische exploitatie van hun bedrijven te realiseren.

Het is spijtig dat het denken over de kringlooplandbouw vooral gericht is op de minerale meststoffen als fosfor (P) en kalium (K). Minstens zo belangrijk is echter aandacht voor koolstof en stikstof, die alle twee zo lang en vaak als mogelijk in organische massa gebonden zouden moeten blijven om klimaatverandering tegen te gaan. Kunnen GCM’s daar wellicht aan bijdragen?

Biobrandstoffen bedreigen kringloopaanpak
Recycling van grondstoffen en hergebruik van organische stof is een must, maar geen wonderoplossing. Omdat er altijd significante verliezen optreden, zijn volledig gesloten landbouwkringlopen een illusie. De kringloopgedachte wordt bovendien bedreigd door de grote hoeveelheden bio-energie die onze samenleving gebruikt. Bio-energie en kringlooplandbouw bijten elkaar in het streven naar duurzame kringlopen. We stoppen koolzaadolie in onze tank en gebruiken houtpellets om elektriciteit op te wekken. Daarmee gebruiken we goede landbouwland, vernietigen we natuur en halen we nutriënten voor langere tijd uit de kringloop. Dat schaadt het voedselsysteem en boert akkers uit en put ecosystemen uit. In Nederland draagt niettemin biomassa voor 54% bij aan zogeheten hernieuwbare energiegebruik. Hoewel Nederland zich in de achterhoede van duurzame energiegebruikers bevindt, ligt het aandeel energie uit biomassa in de duurzame energiemix in de EU met 58% zelfs nog iets hoger dan in Nederland. Daarmee bevinden we ons op een ongewenst, want onduurzaam pad.

Willen we onze samenleving verduurzamen, dan is het essentieel om zoveel mogelijk koolstof vast te leggen of gebonden te houden als organische stof. Dat kan in levende en dode biomassa en door fossiele massa zoveel mogelijk in de bodem te laten. Alleen dat helpt om de concentratie broeikasgassen in de atmosfeer niet verder te laten toenemen. Voedselzekerheid vraagt om een zo klein mogelijk landbouwareaal dat echter groot genoeg moet zijn om de groeiende wereldbevolking te kunnen voeden. De eis ‘zo klein mogelijk, maar zo groot als nodig’ wordt bepaald door onze afhankelijkheid van biodiversiteit. Omdat die zo groot mogelijk moet zijn voor een weerbare leefomgeving, moet een zo groot mogelijke oppervlakte worden gereserveerd voor natuurlijke ecosystemen. Dat betekent dat op goede landbouwgrond voedsel via landbouwsystemen met hoge opbrengsten moet worden geproduceerd. Gebeurt dat niet, dan snoept de landbouw natuur weg met als resultaat dat natuurlijke ecosystemen verzwakken.

Als kunstmest wereldwijd effectief en efficiënt gebruikt wordt, kan de uitputting en degradatie van landbouwgrond en de ontginning van natuurlijke ecosystemen stoppen. Herbebossing wordt mogelijk;

Toch maar kunstmest?
Als de eis om CO2 zo lang mogelijk als levende en dode organische stof vast te houden centraal komt staan, ontstaat een nieuwe kijk op kunstmest. Kunstmest is minder schadelijk dan velen denken. Goed, er wordt CO2 bij productie op basis van fossiele energie uitgestoten, maar bij efficiënt kunstmest gebruik wordt er 20 à 30 keer meer CO2 vastgelegd dan uitgestoten.

Als kunstmest wereldwijd effectief en efficiënt gebruikt wordt, kan de uitputting en degradatie van landbouwgrond en de ontginning van natuurlijke ecosystemen stoppen. Herbebossing wordt mogelijk; de toename van levende en dode organische stof wordt weer veel groter dan de afname. De vastlegging van CO2 kan weer toenemen. Niet voor niets is er in Nederland sinds de uitvinding en het gebruik van kunstmest bijna 100.000 ha bos bijgekomen. Ook de import van nutriënten via veevoer heeft daaraan bijgedragen, nutriënten uit elders gebruikte kunstmest dan wel uit ontbossing en bodemuitputting.

Echt profiteren van de positieve kant van kunstmest tegen verdere klimaatverandering, vraagt om veel meer aandacht voor het vasthouden van de door fotosynthese extra vastgelegde CO2. Dat lijkt een nuttiger spoor dan het gebruik van koolstof in biomassa voor de productie van biogas of andere vormen van energie via (co)vergisting. Dat geldt ook voor al dat kappen in Nederlandse bossen omdat hout “afval” weer een interessante, want als duurzaam gelabelde bron van energie is geworden. Zolang politici en de parlementaire besluiten die zij nemen onvoldoende begrip hebben van de rol die kunstmest in de landbouwcyclus en de impact daarvan op de biodiversiteit, blijft de rem die kunstmest kan zetten op klimaatverandering onderbelicht.

De schadelijkheid van met goedkope fossiele energie geproduceerde kunstmest, is vooral de sterke bevolkingsgroei. Door het gebruik van kunstmest leven er minstens twee en wellicht zelfs drie keer zo veel mensen als zonder kunstmest mogelijk zou zijn geweest. Er zijn schattingen dat de beschikbaarheid van stikstof in de bodem door kunstmest in een voor planten opneembare vorm sinds de ontdekking van kunstmest met een factor drie is toegenomen. Wat dat betekent realiseer je als je weet dat stikstof voor gewasgroei zelfs in droge gebieden een meer beperkende factor is dan water. Zoals we al eerder betoogden, hebben gewassen uiteraard ook fosfaat nodig om effectief van de beschikbare stikstof effectief te profiteren. Fosfaat is dan ook op zijn beurt weer een limiterende factor.

Waarom Gates boer werd
Fosfaat en ruimte zijn twee onmisbare factoren voor het optimaal functioneren van de menselijke maatschappij. De beschikbaarheid van beide staat echter onder druk. Die ontwikkelingen mag mede gezien worden als bron van de groeiende ongelijkheid die Thomas Piketty beschrijft in zijn inmiddels wereldberoemde boek Le capital au XXIe siècle. “Kapitaal is aan de winnende hand, zeker nu de groei terugvalt, en er weinig is wat het tegenhoudt”, een zin uit de korte Nederlandse samenvatting door Wouter van Bergen en Martin Visser. Schaarste drijft de prijzen op en brengt de limiterende factoren in de macht van een beperkt aantal mensen. Niet voor niets zei belegger Jim Rogers al jaren geleden dat boeren rijk zouden worden, maar dat het wel boeren zouden zijn die in een Lamborghini rijden. Zo’n boer is bijvoorbeeld Bill Gates in wiens beleggingsportefeuille een flink lap landbouwgrond zit.

Piketty focust op de weer groeiende invloed van kapitaal in verband met ongelijkheid. Lang nam de wereldrijkdom dusdanig toe dat er genoeg kruimels van tafel vielen voor de minder bedeelden. Maar nu de grenzen van de groei daadwerkelijk zichtbaar worden, neemt dit trickle down effect af

Zolang er nog geen groene kunstmest is, kan stikstofkunstmest gebruik worden – om ongelijkheid te verminderen en de bevolkingsgroei af te remmen. Dat is mogelijk door via landbouwontwikkeling niet alleen te focussen op opbrengstverhoging, maar ook op sociaal-economische ontwikkeling en hogere welvaart in arme landen. ‘Landbouw voor ontwikkeling’ noemde de Wereldbank dat. Zet landbouwontwikkeling, in de vorm van opbrengsten en de groei daarvan, af tegen het nationaal inkomen en er ontstaat een vorm van recht evenredige toename van welvaart en een afname van de bevolkingsgroei in lagelonenlanden. Uiteraard is de relatie veel te ingewikkeld om direct te zijn; ook kunstmest is geen duizenddingen doekje, maar wel een cruciale voorwaarde die aantoonbaar leidt tot grote maatschappelijke veranderingen.

In de armste landen geeft een vrouw gemiddeld het leven aan meer dan 7 geboortes; in de rijkste is dat minder dan 1 geworden. Het mondiale gemiddelde ligt rond de 2,5 geboortes. Op het armste continent, Afrika, varieert het van 7,5 tot 2. Het plateau van 2 geboortes per Afrikaanse vrouw wordt bereikt bij een gemiddeld bruto nationaal inkomen per hoofd van de bevolking van $10.000/jaar. In landen waar dat het geval is, is de productiviteit van de landbouw, uitgedrukt in graan equivalenten, gestegen van van 500 naar 4.000 kg/ha. Het statistische verband tussen die kengetallen is te opvallend om het niet serieus te nemen.

Ongelijkheid neemt verder toe
Piketty focust op de weer groeiende invloed van kapitaal in verband met ongelijkheid. Lang nam de wereldrijkdom dusdanig toe dat er genoeg kruimels van tafel vielen voor de minder bedeelden. Maar nu de grenzen van de groei daadwerkelijk zichtbaar worden, neemt dit trickle down effect af.

Daarnaast is er een mechanisme van heterogene herverdeling van grondstoffen. In de landbouw wordt die veroorzaakt door transport van voeders, en allerlei vormen van marktgerichte landbouw. Dat transport is eenzijdig waar het de waarde van producten betreft. Rijke landen voeren naast veevoer dure producten in als cacao, koffie en thee, en non-food als katoen en rubber. Armere landen importeren met name granen in en laagwaardige (bij)producten uit de veehouderij. Wat grof gesteld, leidt dit tot een logica van uitputting van nutriënten in arme landen en een vervuilende verrijking in de rijke landen.

In lagelonenlanden en met name in Sub-Sahara Afrika, kopen overheden goedkoop voedsel op de wereldmarkt om de groeiende stedelijke bevolking rustig te houden. Dat vinden ze een makkelijker oplossing dan verstandige landbouwontwikkeling, een proces van vele jaren. De groeiende lokale voedselproductie is meer gebaseerd op verdere uitbreiding van het landbouwareaal dan op verhoging van de productiviteit van bodems zodat het areaal kan worden beperkt. Steeds meer landbouwgrond raakt uitgeput, verliest zijn voorraden aan bodemorganische stof aan de atmosfeer en draagt daardoor bij aan klimaatverandering. Hetzelfde geldt voor de uitputting en degradatie van natuurlijke weidegronden en de ontginning van natuurlijke ecosystemen. Voor deze arme landen is dalende voedselproductie in rijke landen catastrofaal, want ze leidt tot stijgende wereldvoedselprijzen. De wereldmarkt reageerde met stijgende prijzen toen Timmermans zijn “green deal” presenteerde, want de markt weet dat 25% biologische landbouw in de EU tot dalende productie zal leiden. Een recente studie van de EU zelf suggereert een 15% daling van de graanproductie. Voor boeren in onze contreien is de krapte een goede ontwikkeling omdat zij in ons deel van de wereld een groter deel uit ons besteedbaar inkomen in hun portemonnee zien vloeien.

We moeten snappen dat landbouwontwikkeling in armere landen gepaard gaat met een mondiaal eerlijker verdeling van ruimte, fosfaat en de productie van stikstof

De wereldwijde les van de Drentse es
Het einde van de landbouwontwikkelingsfase op basis van interne productiemiddelen, land, arbeid en kapitaal (zie onze eerste tekst in deze serie) kwam in zicht toen de bevolkingsgroei een dusdanige verhouding van het areaal aan es- en markegronden met zich meebracht, dat de markegronden te klein en de kuddes vee te groot werden om de vruchtbaarheid van de es gronden hoog genoeg te houden om de bevolking adequaat te voeden. Frans Aarts geeft daarvan een heldere beschrijving in Boeren in Peel en Kempen omstreeks 1800. Als gevolg daarvan werden de markegronden uitgeput en degradeerde de vegetatie. Het areaal van stuifzanden werd steeds groter, tot een maximum van 80.000 ha werd bereikt. Uitputting van rijkere gronden, leem en klei, duurde langer, maar ook daar werd de degradatie onderwerp van groeiende zorg. Dit proces, dat in Nederland stopte door toenemend kunstmestgebruik, is een wereldwijd verschijnsel.

De heterogene herverdeling van nutriënten door gesleep met voedsel en voeders is in wezen het proces van de Drentse es op wereldschaal. De arme landen, de ‘marke gronden’, worden uitgeput door de rijke, de “es gronden”. En net als in Nederland zo’n 150 jaar geleden is de oplossing voor het stoppen van uitputting en degradatie kunstmest.

De oververrijking van de esgronden in de rijke landen moet stoppen. Dan lost het probleem van broeikasgasemissie en stikstofdepositie in Nederland zich van zelf op. Niet kunstmest is het echte probleem maar ongelijkheid. Stop met het slepen van voeder en voedsel over de wereld. Stop met het transformeren van die voeders in dure zuivel en vlees, die tevens een bron van broeikasgassen en stikstofdepositie zijn. En stop met het belastingvrije gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen voor al dat gesleep.

Biologische boeren en tuinders vonden al een mooie oplossing om onze Nederlandse gronden van hun fosfaatverzadiging te ontdoen. Het produceren van gras-klaver mengsels als groene meststof voor akker- en tuinbouw. Maar gaat het niet te ver om te accepteren dat wij doorgaan met een economie gebaseerd op verrijking van onze gronden met de daarbij behorende uitstoot van broeikasgassen? De consequentie is immers ongelijkheid en verarming elders.
Nog gekker wordt het wanneer bedrijven uit rijke landen – zoals Rabobank nu doet – voorstellen om in Afrika boeren te belonen met zogenaamde “carbon-credits” voor de opslag van koolstof in hun gewassen. Wij lijken te denken dat we arme landen kunnen betalen om evenveel CO2 vast te leggen als wij uitstoten. Wie het bovenstaande goed tot zich heeft laten doordringen weet dat dat niet gaat op markegronden, tenzij we de Afrikaanse boeren en burgers in staat stellen om zelf esgronden te ontwikkelen en rijker te worden. Maar hun groeiende materiële rijkdom gaat er bij ons af.
We moeten snappen dat landbouwontwikkeling in armere landen gepaard gaat met een mondiaal eerlijker verdeling van ruimte, fosfaat en de productie van stikstof. Circulaire landbouw maakt daar een begin mee, maar vergt ontwikkeling van de landbouw in gebieden die niet zelfvoorzienend zijn. Afrika is het bekendste en grootste voorbeeld.

Deze serie wordt, zonder enige redactionele invloed, mogelijk gemaakt door boerencoöperatie Agrifirm. Boeren hebben behoefte aan perspectief en willen graag een duidelijk beeld van de meststoffen die ze de komende 30 jaar mogen gebruiken. Dat beeld is er op dit moment nog niet en kan daarom in de openheid van een niet-ideologisch en zo feitelijk mogelijk gesprek ontwikkeld worden. Een en ander als voorbereiding op (politieke) meningsvorming en normstellingen.

Het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving adviseert de overheid te komen met dwingende normen voor circulariteit, met name op het gebied van landbouw. Eén van de belangrijkste circulaire schakels in de landbouw is die van mest. Dieren (mensen incluis) eten planten of elkaar en produceren mest die voedsel is voor nieuw leven. Werkt die natuurlijke circulariteit ook in het landbouwsysteem, dat wil zeggen in de natuur die we hebben ingericht om de wensen van naar welvaart strevende mensen optimaal te bedienen? We willen genoeg te eten hebben en daar niet al te veel voor betalen. Tevens willen we de biodiversiteit versterken. Met kunstmest kan dat, een strategie waar de VS op in lijken te zetten. Europese overheden willen er vanaf omdat het maken van kunstmest veel fossiele energie kost en bij te royale toepassing de bodem uitboert. Op dit moment ligt de kunstmestfabriek van Yara in Sluiskil stil omdat de aardgasprijzen te hoog zijn om tegen acceptabele prijzen kunstmest te produceren. Met de Green Deal en de Farm2Fork-strategie heeft de EU heeft besloten voor 25% fossielvrije landbouw te gaan.
Een nieuw tijdperk kondigt zich aan. Den Haag en Brussel stellen de voedselketen voor een nieuwe uitdaging, met nieuwe normen waaraan de landbouw moet voldoen.

Zolang politici en de parlementaire besluiten die zij nemen onvoldoende begrip hebben van de rol die kunstmest in de landbouwcyclus en de impact daarvan op de biodiversiteit, blijft de rem die kunstmest kan zetten op klimaatverandering onderbelicht.

De schadelijkheid van met goedkope fossiele energie geproduceerde kunstmest, is vooral de sterke bevolkingsgroei. Door het gebruik van kunstmest leven er minstens twee en wellicht zelfs drie keer zo veel mensen als zonder kunstmest mogelijk zou zijn geweest. Er zijn schattingen dat de beschikbaarheid van stikstof in de bodem door kunstmest in een voor planten opneembare vorm sinds de ontdekking van kunstmest met een factor drie is toegenomen. Wat dat betekent realiseer je als je weet dat stikstof voor gewasgroei zelfs in droge gebieden een meer beperkende factor is dan water. Zoals we al eerder betoogden, hebben gewassen uiteraard ook fosfaat nodig om effectief van de beschikbare stikstof effectief te profiteren. Fosfaat is dan ook op zijn beurt weer een limiterende factor.

Waarom Gates boer werd
Fosfaat en ruimte zijn twee onmisbare factoren voor het optimaal functioneren van de menselijke maatschappij. De beschikbaarheid van beide staat echter onder druk. Die ontwikkelingen mag mede gezien worden als bron van de groeiende ongelijkheid die Thomas Piketty beschrijft in zijn inmiddels wereldberoemde boek Le capital au XXIe siècle. “Kapitaal is aan de winnende hand, zeker nu de groei terugvalt, en er weinig is wat het tegenhoudt”, een zin uit de korte Nederlandse samenvatting door Wouter van Bergen en Martin Visser. Schaarste drijft de prijzen op en brengt de limiterende factoren in de macht van een beperkt aantal mensen. Niet voor niets zei belegger Jim Rogers al jaren geleden dat boeren rijk zouden worden, maar dat het wel boeren zouden zijn die in een Lamborghini rijden. Zo’n boer is bijvoorbeeld Bill Gates in wiens beleggingsportefeuille een flink lap landbouwgrond zit.

Zolang er nog geen groene kunstmest is, kan stikstofkunstmest gebruik worden – om ongelijkheid te verminderen en de bevolkingsgroei af te remmen. Dat is mogelijk door via landbouwontwikkeling niet alleen te focussen op opbrengstverhoging, maar ook op sociaal-economische ontwikkeling en hogere welvaart in arme landen. ‘Landbouw voor ontwikkeling’ noemde de Wereldbank dat. Zet landbouwontwikkeling, in de vorm van opbrengsten en de groei daarvan, af tegen het nationaal inkomen en er ontstaat een vorm van recht evenredige toename van welvaart en een afname van de bevolkingsgroei in lagelonenlanden. Uiteraard is de relatie veel te ingewikkeld om direct te zijn; ook kunstmest is geen duizenddingen doekje, maar wel een cruciale voorwaarde die aantoonbaar leidt tot grote maatschappelijke veranderingen.

In de armste landen geeft een vrouw gemiddeld het leven aan meer dan 7 geboortes; in de rijkste is dat minder dan 1 geworden. Het mondiale gemiddelde ligt rond de 2,5 geboortes. Op het armste continent, Afrika, varieert het van 7,5 tot 2. Het plateau van 2 geboortes per Afrikaanse vrouw wordt bereikt bij een gemiddeld bruto nationaal inkomen per hoofd van de bevolking van $10.000/jaar. In landen waar dat het geval is, is de productiviteit van de landbouw, uitgedrukt in graan equivalenten, gestegen van van 500 naar 4.000 kg/ha. Het statistische verband tussen die kengetallen is te opvallend om het niet serieus te nemen.

Ongelijkheid neemt verder toe
Piketty focust op de weer groeiende invloed van kapitaal in verband met ongelijkheid. Lang nam de wereldrijkdom dusdanig toe dat er genoeg kruimels van tafel vielen voor de minder bedeelden. Maar nu de grenzen van de groei daadwerkelijk zichtbaar worden, neemt dit trickle down effect af.

Daarnaast is er een mechanisme van heterogene herverdeling van grondstoffen. In de landbouw wordt die veroorzaakt door transport van voeders, en allerlei vormen van marktgerichte landbouw. Dat transport is eenzijdig waar het de waarde van producten betreft. Rijke landen voeren naast veevoer dure producten in als cacao, koffie en thee, en non-food als katoen en rubber. Armere landen importeren met name granen in en laagwaardige (bij)producten uit de veehouderij. Wat grof gesteld, leidt dit tot een logica van uitputting van nutriënten in arme landen en een vervuilende verrijking in de rijke landen.

In lagelonenlanden en met name in Sub-Sahara Afrika, kopen overheden goedkoop voedsel op de wereldmarkt om de groeiende stedelijke bevolking rustig te houden. Dat vinden ze een makkelijker oplossing dan verstandige landbouwontwikkeling, een proces van vele jaren. De groeiende lokale voedselproductie is meer gebaseerd op verdere uitbreiding van het landbouwareaal dan op verhoging van de productiviteit van bodems zodat het areaal kan worden beperkt. Steeds meer landbouwgrond raakt uitgeput, verliest zijn voorraden aan bodemorganische stof aan de atmosfeer en draagt daardoor bij aan klimaatverandering. Hetzelfde geldt voor de uitputting en degradatie van natuurlijke weidegronden en de ontginning van natuurlijke ecosystemen. Voor deze arme landen is dalende voedselproductie in rijke landen catastrofaal, want ze leidt tot stijgende wereldvoedselprijzen. De wereldmarkt reageerde met stijgende prijzen toen Timmermans zijn “green deal” presenteerde, want de markt weet dat 25% biologische landbouw in de EU tot dalende productie zal leiden. Een recente studie van de EU zelf suggereert een 15% daling van de graanproductie. Voor boeren in onze contreien is de krapte een goede ontwikkeling omdat zij in ons deel van de wereld een groter deel uit ons besteedbaar inkomen in hun portemonnee zien vloeien.

We moeten snappen dat landbouwontwikkeling in armere landen gepaard gaat met een mondiaal eerlijker verdeling van ruimte, fosfaat en de productie van stikstof

De wereldwijde les van de Drentse es
Het einde van de landbouwontwikkelingsfase op basis van interne productiemiddelen, land, arbeid en kapitaal (zie onze eerste tekst in deze serie) kwam in zicht toen de bevolkingsgroei een dusdanige verhouding van het areaal aan es- en markegronden met zich meebracht, dat de markegronden te klein en de kuddes vee te groot werden om de vruchtbaarheid van de es gronden hoog genoeg te houden om de bevolking adequaat te voeden. Frans Aarts geeft daarvan een heldere beschrijving in Boeren in Peel en Kempen omstreeks 1800. Als gevolg daarvan werden de markegronden uitgeput en degradeerde de vegetatie. Het areaal van stuifzanden werd steeds groter, tot een maximum van 80.000 ha werd bereikt. Uitputting van rijkere gronden, leem en klei, duurde langer, maar ook daar werd de degradatie onderwerp van groeiende zorg. Dit proces, dat in Nederland stopte door toenemend kunstmestgebruik, is een wereldwijd verschijnsel.

De heterogene herverdeling van nutriënten door gesleep met voedsel en voeders is in wezen het proces van de Drentse es op wereldschaal. De arme landen, de ‘marke gronden’, worden uitgeput door de rijke, de “es gronden”. En net als in Nederland zo’n 150 jaar geleden is de oplossing voor het stoppen van uitputting en degradatie kunstmest.

De oververrijking van de esgronden in de rijke landen moet stoppen. Dan lost het probleem van broeikasgasemissie en stikstofdepositie in Nederland zich van zelf op. Niet kunstmest is het echte probleem maar ongelijkheid. Stop met het slepen van voeder en voedsel over de wereld. Stop met het transformeren van die voeders in dure zuivel en vlees, die tevens een bron van broeikasgassen en stikstofdepositie zijn. En stop met het belastingvrije gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen voor al dat gesleep.

Biologische boeren en tuinders vonden al een mooie oplossing om onze Nederlandse gronden van hun fosfaatverzadiging te ontdoen. Het produceren van gras-klaver mengsels als groene meststof voor akker- en tuinbouw. Maar gaat het niet te ver om te accepteren dat wij doorgaan met een economie gebaseerd op verrijking van onze gronden met de daarbij behorende uitstoot van broeikasgassen? De consequentie is immers ongelijkheid en verarming elders.
Nog gekker wordt het wanneer bedrijven uit rijke landen – zoals Rabobank nu doet – voorstellen om in Afrika boeren te belonen met zogenaamde “carbon-credits” voor de opslag van koolstof in hun gewassen. Wij lijken te denken dat we arme landen kunnen betalen om evenveel CO2 vast te leggen als wij uitstoten. Wie het bovenstaande goed tot zich heeft laten doordringen weet dat dat niet gaat op markegronden, tenzij we de Afrikaanse boeren en burgers in staat stellen om zelf esgronden te ontwikkelen en rijker te worden. Maar hun groeiende materiële rijkdom gaat er bij ons af.
We moeten snappen dat landbouwontwikkeling in armere landen gepaard gaat met een mondiaal eerlijker verdeling van ruimte, fosfaat en de productie van stikstof. Circulaire landbouw maakt daar een begin mee, maar vergt ontwikkeling van de landbouw in gebieden die niet zelfvoorzienend zijn. Afrika is het bekendste en grootste voorbeeld.

Deze serie wordt, zonder enige redactionele invloed, mogelijk gemaakt door boerencoöperatie Agrifirm. Boeren hebben behoefte aan perspectief en willen graag een duidelijk beeld van de meststoffen die ze de komende 30 jaar mogen gebruiken. Dat beeld is er op dit moment nog niet en kan daarom in de openheid van een niet-ideologisch en zo feitelijk mogelijk gesprek ontwikkeld worden. Een en ander als voorbereiding op (politieke) meningsvorming en normstellingen.

Het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving adviseert de overheid te komen met dwingende normen voor circulariteit, met name op het gebied van landbouw. Eén van de belangrijkste circulaire schakels in de landbouw is die van mest. Dieren (mensen incluis) eten planten of elkaar en produceren mest die voedsel is voor nieuw leven. Werkt die natuurlijke circulariteit ook in het landbouwsysteem, dat wil zeggen in de natuur die we hebben ingericht om de wensen van naar welvaart strevende mensen optimaal te bedienen? We willen genoeg te eten hebben en daar niet al te veel voor betalen. Tevens willen we de biodiversiteit versterken. Met kunstmest kan dat, een strategie waar de VS op in lijken te zetten. Europese overheden willen er vanaf omdat het maken van kunstmest veel fossiele energie kost en bij te royale toepassing de bodem uitboert. Op dit moment ligt de kunstmestfabriek van Yara in Sluiskil stil omdat de aardgasprijzen te hoog zijn om tegen acceptabele prijzen kunstmest te produceren. Met de Green Deal en de Farm2Fork-strategie heeft de EU heeft besloten voor 25% fossielvrije landbouw te gaan.
Een nieuw tijdperk kondigt zich aan. Den Haag en Brussel stellen de voedselketen voor een nieuwe uitdaging, met nieuwe normen waaraan de landbouw moet voldoen.

The ability to proliferate and evolve is one of the defining characteristics of living organisms. However, no artificial materials with these characteristics have been created. In order to develop an artificial molecular system that can multiply and evolve, the information (genes) coded in DNA must be translated into RNA, proteins must be expressed, and the cycle of DNA replication with those proteins must continue over a long period in the system. To date, it has been impossible to create a reaction system in which the genes necessary for DNA replication are expressed while those genes simultaneously carry out their function.

The group succeeded in translating the genes into proteins and replicating the original circular DNA with the translated proteins by using a circular DNA carrying two genes necessary for DNA replication (artificial genomic DNA) and a cell-free transcription-translation system(1). Furthermore, they also successfully improved the DNA to evolve to a DNA with a 10-fold increase in replication efficiency by continuing this DNA replication cycle for about 60 days.

By adding the genes necessary for transcription and translation to the artificial genomic DNA developed by the group, it could be possible to develop artificial cells that can grow autonomously simply by feeding them low-molecular-weight compounds such as amino acids and nucleotides, in the future. If such artificial cells can be created, we can expect that useful substances currently produced using living organisms (such as substances for drug development and food production) will become more stable and easier to control.

This research has been led by Professor Norikazu Ichihashi, a research director of the project “Development of a self-regenerative artificial genome replication-transcription-translation system” in the research area “Large-scale genome synthesis and cell programming” under the JST’s Strategic Basic Research Programs CREST (Team type). In this research area, JST aims to elucidate basic principles in relation to the structure and function of genomes for the creation of a platform technology for the use of cells.

A reaction solution containing all the factors necessary for the RNA transcription from genes encoded in DNA and translation into proteins outside the cell. The system also captured external factors such as location, weather, commute duration, and commute variability.

Researchers analyzed data from 275 workers collected over a one-year period prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The workers, close to 95% of whom drove, were monitored as they traveled. They were also monitored for 30-minute periods before and after commuting.

“We were able to build machine learning models to accurately predict job performance,” said Subigya Nepal a PhD student at Dartmouth and lead author of the paper. “The key was being able to objectively assess commuting stress along with the physiological reaction to the commuting experience.”

The study assessed workers using two recognized criteria of job performance: counterproductive work behavior and organizational citizenship behavior. Counterproductive behavior deliberately harms an organization, whereas citizenship behaviors are beneficial. Baselines for both measures were established regularly through self-reporting questionnaires.

“Compared to low performers, high performers display greater consistency in the time they arrive and leave work,” said Pino Audia, a professor of Management and Organizations at the Tuck School of Business, a senior scientist on the study team, and a co-author of the study. “This dramatically reduces the negative impacts of commuting variability and suggests that the secret to high performance may lie in sticking to better routines.”

Additional differences in the commuting patterns of high and low performers include:
